Original BatWars 2000

November 4th, 2000 was a beautiful, bright Florida day, the kind we locals like to refer to as “Chamber of Commerce Weather”.  The Original Bat Wars 2000 flowed perfectly without a hitch with new implementations in place to assure that the event would be able to handle the expected increases in numbers.  And did they increase!  Over 1,200 grassroots softball players passed through the swing stations alone, drawing the largest crowd

One of our newest twists and what turned out to be a huge hit with the vendors and the attendees alike was the addition of Scott Pinner, the Voice of Bat Wars and Bob Smith, Bat Wars Comedian At Large. These two guys rocked, interviewing manufacturers reps and softball players alike all day long and keeping the place hopping as they spun some tunes.  Scott has announced many collegiate softball games and Bob socks ‘em nightly as a stand up comedian, but after the event was over, both of them were exhausted and elated.  Did we have the same problem with our Bat Wars tallies as the State of Florida in the 2000 Presidential election?! No way - although the tallies were just as close as they were for Bush and Gore - the great thing about bats is that they can’t talk. All of this year’s bats that were swung by the participants were bought from various retailers across the United States and chosen from inventory by random.

The year 2001 could bring some big changes for Bat Wars so make sure to stay in touch with THE Softball Magazine which brings the grassroots softball player the best of the sport in publication and in promotions.

of participants ever in the four year history of the event.  We had weather on our side for the first time since the inception of the event in Florida four years ago and although the weather was fantastic in California, it sure was great to be close to home thanks to Andy Dunn and Trey Fraser of the Florida Marlins Major League Baseball Organization and Wanda Speir of the Southeast Chapter of the March of Dimes.  The Marlins Organization went all out as they assisted us in equipment such as the professional batting cages, screens and whatever else was asked of them.  The Jugs Company continued an incredible sponsorship of Bat Wars with brand new Jugs pitching machines and our thanks as always to all of the vendors who go all out to attend the event to bring the sport to the grassroots players, especially to our partner in Bat Wars 2000, Eastbay and to Easton Sports, the Official Sponsor of the Slowpitch field.
